I am using Gmail from last three years with the same account, but I don't know why a popup error appears saying "smtp.gmail.com failed" & I was not able to send emails from third party client. I just enabled the Allow less secure apps option in the My Account > Security > Less Secure apps. And it just fixed my error & I hope yours also gets fixed with the help of this Solution.
